Joyous Movement as exercise

Some people love exercise, and others don't, but we all know that it is vital to keep our bodies moving. Our health depends on it. Whether you are young or old, you have to find a type of activity you like to do that will bring joy into your life. This way, exercise will not be viewed as a chore, and you are more likely to stick with it.

The type of activity depends on the individual. There are team-led sports such as football or basketball. You could join a club or take lessons such as tennis, dance, or golf. Activities with family and friends such as a bike ride, going for a walk, or swimming are also fun.

What does exercise do for me?

There are many benefits of exercise:

  • It will boost your mood.
  • It sharpens your focus and concentration and improves academic scores.
  • It reduces your stress and improves your sleep.
  • It improves your fitness level and helps keep your weight stable.
  • It builds a strong heart, bones, and healthier muscles.
  • It provides an opportunity to socialize.
  • It improves your self-esteem.

Endurance:  When you do aerobic activity regularly, it builds your endurance. During aerobic exercise your large muscles are moving, your heart beats faster, and you breathe harder. Aerobic activity strengthens the heart and lungs, which improves the body's ability to deliver oxygen to all its cells.

Strength:  There are many ways you can build strong muscles to improve your strength. Some people like to lift weights, however, you can also do push-ups, stomach crunches, squats, or other exercises to help tone and strengthen your muscles.

Flexibility:  It is essential to maintain flexibility throughout your life. Being flexible allows muscles and joints to move and bend easily. Therefore, this helps improve balance and strength, enhances physical performance, and decreases injury potential.

Making changes to your lifestyle can be a challenge, as perhaps there is a lack of motivation or interest. The key is to build slowly and be consistent. By combining healthy food choices and regular physical activity, you can live a more happy and vibrant life.

Here are some tips for making changes to your lifestyle:

  • Engage your kids in a variety of age-appropriate activities.
  • Be active as part of daily life and schedule physical activity at a specific time of day.
  • Decrease screen time to avoid sedentary behavior.
  • Choose a healthy lifestyle for yourself, and you will be a role model for your family.
  • Enjoy being active together as a family.
  • By keeping it fun, your kids will look forward to participating in physical activity.

** It is always imperative to check with your doctor before starting any kind of exercise program.
